Dino AI Hub is a physical appliance — a Mac, configured to run your business operations locally, sitting in your office. This page is the honest version of what that actually means: what's in the box, why the hardware is what it is, what you need to provide on your end, and what happens when the hardware eventually ages out. The architectural argument from every comparison page on this site comes down to a real object you can see, touch, and verify — not a metaphor.
We chose to ship a real Mac rather than custom server hardware for reasons we'll explain in detail below. The short version: Apple Silicon is genuinely the best price-performance hardware for on-device AI inference today, the reliability of Apple's Pro-line hardware is excellent, and we'd rather sell you a Mac you could in theory have ordered yourself than a black-box server appliance you couldn't repair or verify. The configuration we ship makes it an appliance — locked down to run only the operations software, tuned for unattended 24/7 use, with the small set of accessories that turn it into a server.
01 — What's in the box
Every Dino AI Hub appliance ships with five items:
01 — The Mac itself
Configured to the right specification for your operation. The Core tier ships an M5 Pro 64GB MacBook Pro; smaller-footprint operations get a Mac mini, and high-concurrency operations get a Mac Studio — sized for your specific operational needs during the discovery call. The Mac arrives with the operations software pre-installed, pre-configured to your shop's specific setup, and ready to plug in. You don't run an installer or activate anything.
02 — Power cable and adapter
The appropriate power cable and adapter for your specific Mac. Sized to provide sustained full-performance power, not to barely keep up.
03 — HDMI ghost connector
MacBook Pro configurations only. A small dongle that plugs into one of the Mac's display outputs. Without it, the Mac would think it has no external display connected, and when you close the lid, it would go to sleep. The ghost connector tells the Mac there's an external monitor attached, which lets it run in "clamshell mode" — lid closed, indefinitely, without sleeping. This is what turns a laptop into a server. It's a small piece of engineering that matters more than it looks.
04 — Secure power cable clip
A bracket that holds the power cable firmly into the Mac's power port. If someone in your office bumps the desk, kicks the cable, or pulls a vacuum across it, an unsecured cable can pop loose. When that happens, the Mac runs on battery (on MacBook Pro configurations) for a few hours, then shuts down — or shuts down immediately on Mac mini and Mac Studio. When the appliance shuts down, your phones, dispatch, and customer portal stop working. The clip prevents that specific failure mode.
05 — Setup guide
A printed quick-start covering physical placement, network connection, and the small number of decisions you'll make in the first 15 minutes after powering on.

Docking station
For shops that want a more permanent installation with additional peripherals — wired ethernet, additional USB devices, secondary backup storage, integrated cable management — we offer a compatible docking station as an add-on. Most shops don't need it; the Mac's built-in ports handle the standard configuration. The docking station is for the operations that want a cleaner desk surface or have specific peripheral needs.
02 — Why Apple Silicon
The honest version of this choice, because some buyers will be skeptical that consumer hardware is the right answer for business-critical operations.
Apple Silicon is the best on-device AI hardware at this price point.
The M5 Pro's unified memory architecture is what makes local AI receptionists practical at all — the model weights and context windows live in memory that the GPU, CPU, and Neural Engine all access directly, without the data-movement overhead that dedicated GPU servers incur. For the specific workload of running language models locally for voice interaction, Apple Silicon outperforms most discrete-GPU server hardware costing several times as much.
Reliability is excellent.
Apple's hardware failure rates for the Pro line are well-documented in industry studies and consistently among the lowest in the consumer category. The components are engineered for sustained heavy use; the build quality is verifiable. The same hardware that runs creative-professional workloads 12 hours a day in studios is the hardware running your appliance.
Repair and replacement infrastructure exists.
Every Apple Store and authorized service provider can diagnose this hardware. If our entire team disappeared, your Mac is still a Mac — it can be repaired through Apple's standard channels, the screen can be replaced, the battery can be serviced. Custom server hardware doesn't have this ecosystem.
You can verify it's not a black box.
It's a Mac you could in principle have ordered from Apple yourself. The hardware specs are what they are; we didn't fabricate a mystery box. The software running on it is ours, but the hardware is something the entire industry already trusts.
The Apple lineup gives us the right hardware for every operational profile.
We ship the MacBook Pro at the Core tier because the integrated battery, built-in screen, and small portable form factor hit the right balance for most trade businesses. Mac mini is available for operations where the smaller footprint and lower cost matter more than the integrated battery. Mac Studio is available for shops with higher AI concurrency loads where the additional compute is justified. The common thread is Apple Silicon — the form factor changes by tier; the underlying architecture and reliability do not.
Energy efficiency is genuinely meaningful.
Apple Silicon draws roughly 20–40 watts under typical load — comparable to a single LED lightbulb. A custom server appliance running the same AI workload typically draws 200–600 watts. Over five years of 24/7 operation, the electricity savings alone are measurable.
03 — Where it lives in your office
Physical setup requirements are minimal:
- A flat surface. A desk, a shelf, a wall-mounted bracket. Footprint varies by configuration: MacBook Pro is 14-inch or 16-inch, Mac mini is roughly the size of a hardback book, Mac Studio is a small 7-inch square. All fit anywhere.
- A standard 110V power outlet within reach of the charging cable. Add an inexpensive UPS (under $200) for power-loss resilience — recommended but not required.
- A reliable wired or WiFi internet connection. Wired ethernet is strongly preferred for production use because of latency and reliability; the docking station provides ethernet if your Mac model doesn't have it directly.
- A climate-controlled environment — meaning a normal office, not a hot garage or unheated basement. The hardware operates reliably across the temperature range any office occupant would tolerate.
- Reasonable security. The Mac should be physically secured against casual theft (locked office, secured shelf, or laptop lock). The encryption protects the data if the hardware is stolen, but the appliance being missing means your operations stop until it's replaced.
That's the entire physical setup. No server room, no rack, no dedicated cooling, no network team required.
04 — Hardware-level security
The security commitments described on the Security page start at the hardware level:
- Apple Secure Enclave stores the appliance's encryption keys in dedicated security hardware separate from the main system memory.
- FileVault full-disk encryption is enabled by default. The disk is encrypted at rest; even direct removal of the storage from the chassis doesn't expose the data without the encryption keys.
- Secure Boot ensures the operating system loads only from a trusted, verified chain. Tampering with the boot process is detected and prevented.
- The appliance is configured as locked-down hardware. The operations software is the primary interface, the underlying macOS is configured to prevent installation of unauthorized software, and access to system internals is restricted to our support team's diagnostic procedures during incidents.
Combined with the network-level and application-level commitments documented on the Security page, the hardware-level protections form the first layer of the data-ownership architecture.
05 — End-of-life: year 6, 8, 10
The honest version. All hardware eventually ages, and pretending otherwise damages credibility.
Apple supports their hardware with macOS updates for typically 6–8 years. After that, your specific Mac model stops receiving new macOS updates from Apple. The hardware continues to function, but it's no longer receiving security patches from Apple, and at some point our software may require newer macOS versions that your hardware can't run.
When that point arrives, you buy a new appliance (current tier, current generation of hardware), and we migrate your data from the old appliance to the new one. The migration process is structurally identical to the original migration from your prior FSM platform — covered in detail on the Migration page. Your old appliance keeps working on whatever software version it was on; you can keep it as a backup or repurpose it.
This is the honest tradeoff against cloud FSM. Cloud subscriptions keep working forever as long as you keep paying; hardware eventually requires replacement. We think the local-first architecture is worth the periodic hardware refresh, but we don't pretend the refresh doesn't exist. The total cost of ownership over 8–10 years still strongly favors Dino AI Hub over cloud FSM subscriptions, but the cost structure includes the eventual replacement.
You'll know it's coming a year or more in advance. We monitor Apple's support lifecycle for the hardware we ship; when your appliance is approaching end-of-support, we let you know with enough lead time to budget for the replacement and schedule the migration during a low-activity window.
06 — What the appliance doesn't replace
Some things the appliance depends on but doesn't provide:
- Internet connection. Your shop's existing internet service. The appliance is local-first for data and AI processing, but it still needs network access for phone integration, payment processing, SMS, email, and any cloud integrations you configure (QuickBooks Online, Meta/Instagram, Google Calendar).
- Phone service. Inbound calls reach the appliance through a telephony provider (Twilio is the default; your existing carrier can be integrated). The phone number(s) are yours, ported in during onboarding.
- Payment processing. Stripe (or another processor) handles the actual card transactions. The appliance manages quotes, invoices, and the customer-facing payment flow; the money movement happens through your payment processor.
- Backup power (recommended, not required). A basic UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) under $200 covers a typical office power blip. The Mac's built-in battery handles brief interruptions, but for hours-long outages a UPS is the right answer.
- Climate-controlled space. Normal office conditions are fine; truly hot/cold environments aren't.
- Physical security. Standard office security — locked doors, controlled access. The encryption protects data, not the hardware itself.
07 — A few questions we get often
Why MacBook Pro for the Core tier specifically — do you ever ship Mac mini or Mac Studio?
Yes, both are available on other tiers depending on your operational profile. Mac mini fits shops where the smaller footprint and lower cost matter more than the integrated battery and screen — typically operations with reliable power and an existing UPS already in place. Mac Studio fits shops with higher AI concurrency loads or larger teams where the additional compute is justified. We default the Core tier to the MacBook Pro because the integrated battery, built-in screen (useful for on-site diagnostics during incidents), and small portable form factor hit the right balance for most trade businesses. The right choice for your specific shop is something we figure out during the discovery call.
Can I provide my own Mac?
No. The appliance ships pre-configured with the operations software, the security configuration, and the specific tier-matched hardware. We don't ship the software as a standalone install for customer hardware because the configuration depends on the specific hardware we know we're shipping. If you want to use a Mac you already own as a secondary device (training, testing), that's a different conversation worth having during discovery.
What if I don't like Apple as a vendor?
We hear this. The honest answer: Apple Silicon's price-performance lead for on-device AI is significant enough today that we couldn't responsibly ship a Linux or Windows server appliance and call it equivalent. If Apple's position changes (or if a competitor closes the gap), we'd consider alternatives. For now, the engineering case for Apple Silicon is decisive.
Can I open the appliance / install other software / use it as a regular Mac?
The appliance is configured as locked-down hardware for production use. You don't get root access to install other software through the operations interface, because doing so would compromise the security model. If you need a Mac for other purposes, buy one separately.
What happens if the battery wears out?
On MacBook Pro configurations, batteries are user-serviceable through Apple. Battery replacement is straightforward and inexpensive relative to the appliance cost. We coordinate battery replacement during scheduled downtime if it becomes necessary. Mac mini and Mac Studio configurations don't have internal batteries — the recommended external UPS handles power resilience for those.
What's the warranty?
1-year hardware warranty included; extended warranty available at purchase and at renewal. The extended warranty unlocks priority replacement from our reserved inventory, which matters because high-spec Macs have 2–3+ week shipping windows from Apple. The conversation we'd suggest
The right hardware configuration for your shop is something we figure out together during the discovery call, based on your actual call volume, team size, and operational patterns. We don't oversell — most shops are well-served by the Core tier (M5 Pro 64GB), and we'd rather you start with what you need than overpay for capacity you might use someday. If your operations grow past your appliance's concurrency capacity later, you can upgrade — your existing appliance gets repurposed or returned for trade credit, the new one gets configured from your current data, and the cutover happens during a low-activity window.
